YPHSIG Conference October 2010 - Leeds City Hilton Hotel

The Young People's Health Special Interest Group of the RCPCH is holding it's third annual conference on the 7th & 8th October 2010 at the Leeds City Hilton. We know that times are tight and that study leave budgets are limited so we have negotiated a great conference package which is affordable but does not compromise on quality.  The package includes overnight accommodation and  dinner as well as a year's membership of the YPHSIG. The conference is aimed at Paediatricians (Consultants and Trainees) including general, community and others with a interest in young people’s health. We welcome colleagues from adult medicine, general practice, nursing, professions allied to medicine, and others who work with young people. The overall aim of the conference is to improve the skills and knowledge of young people’s health, facilitate the development of professional networks and raise the profile of young people’s health. The theme of the conference is managing the complexity in young people's health and we have sessions on self harm, eating disorders, common teenage health problems, substance misuse, adolescent gynaecology, sexual assault and contraception. We also have sessions on participation and advocacy for young people as well as an update on training in adolescent health. We hope you will join us and especially look forward to welcoming new members.

Training in Adolescent Health for Paediatric Specialty Trainees

The development of the Adolescent Health Module with the RCPCH continues apace and Becky Sands and Naomi Jones are planning to attend the college Education Committee meeting in July to present the draft competency framework and supporting assessment standards. We are aiming for the first trainees to be using the competency framework in February 2011. If you are a paediatric ST trainee interested in developing some expertise in adolescent health please contact us (damian.wood@nuh.nhs.uk) as we are planning to evaluate the piloting and implementation of the competency framework over the coming months.

New YPHSIG Website Under Construction

After a number of discussions with members and the steering group we have decided to reformat our website. The current content management system has limited capability and if we are to attract new internet savvy members we need a web presence which reflects our organisation young, responsive and keen to hear from it's members.

With members spread all over the UK (and some further afield!) the development of a Web2.0 compatabile site has become imperative. So over the past few weeks we have being developing a new site. In the spirit of YPHSIG the cost is very low and we are making good use of the new web authoring tools available via Google Sites.

Please let us know what you think about the site. YPHSIG members can view the site at http://sites.google.com/site/yphsig/. When the site is complete we will transfer it to the domain name www.yphsig.org.uk to replace the old site.

We will keep you posted about further developments via this blog.
